چکیده

It has been suggested by Dwek (2004) that iron needles could explain the submillimetre emission from the Cas A supernova remnant (SNR) with only a very small total mass. We investigate whether a similar model holds for the Kepler supernova remnant, and find that its emission could indeed be explained by a dust mass of less than 10M⊙, dependent on the axial ratio l/a of the needles which we constrain to be less than 700. But the implied needle model for Kepler is inconsistent with that suggested for Cas A since either the needles would have to have a resistivity one or two orders of magnitude greater than those in Cas A or the electron density in Kepler’s shocked plasma must be 40 times greater than suggested by X-ray observations. An additional problem with the needle model is that the implied thickness of the needles seems to be implausibly small, if the emission properties are calculated under the usual approximations.

ASCA X - Ray Spectroscopy of LMC Supernova Remnants and the Metal Abundances of the LMC

We present the results of X-ray spectroscopy of a flux-limited sample of seven middle-aged supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC): N23, N49, N63A, DEM71, N132D, 0453−68.5, and N49B. We constructed self-consistent nonequilibrium ionization SNR models assuming a Sedov solution for the dynamical evolution, and then applied the resulting spectral models to the data obtained b...

Observations of the Twin Supernova Remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud , DEM L 316

We report results from an ASCA X-ray study of DEM L316, an emission nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) consisting of two closely-spaced supernova remnants (SNRs). The SIS image shows separate X-ray sources located at the positions of the two radioand optically-emitting SNR shells, 0547−69.7A and 0547−69.7B (hereafter, shell A and B). The individual X-ray spectrum of each shell is well d...

X-ray High Resolution and Imaging Spectroscopy of Supernova Remnants

The launch of Chandra and XMM-Newton has led to important new findings concerning the X-ray emission from supernova remnants. These findings are a result of the high spatial resolution with which imaging spectroscopy is now possible, but also some useful results have come out of the grating spectrometers of both X-ray observatories, despite the extended nature of supernova remnants. The finding...

Tools for Dissecting Supernova Remnants Observed with Chandra: Methods and Application to the Galactic Remnant W49B

We introduce methods to quantify the X-ray morphologies of supernova remnants observed with the Chandra X-ray Telescope. These include a power-ratio technique to measure morphological asymmetries, correlation-length analysis to probe chemical segregation and distribution, and wavelet-transform analysis to quantify X-ray substructure. We demonstrate the utility and accuracy of these techniques o...

Contribution of nuclei accelerated by gamma-ray pulsars to cosmic rays in the Galaxy

We consider the galactic population of gamma-ray pulsars as possible sources of cosmic rays at and just above the “knee” in the observed cosmic ray spectrum at 1015–1016 eV. We suggest that iron nuclei may be accelerated in the outer gaps of pulsars, and then suffer partial photo-disintegration in the non-thermal radiation fields of the outer gaps. As a result, protons, neutrons, and surviving ...
